Diet for Patients with Kidney Stones

By Hadwin Bragg at 2012-03-04 22:53:34
Pain induced by kidney stones can only be explained by a person who has experienced it. It is very common to develop stones in the kidneys these days. One of the major factors of developing kidney stones is diet. Other reasons can be attributed to environment, heredity, fluid intake, etc. Food is used by the body for energy and tissue repair. After utilizing what is required, the waste is carried through bloodstream to the kidneys in order to be excreted as urine. Certain foods make waste that is crystalline in nature. These crystals grow up to form stones in the kidneys. Not only these stones are severely painful at times, but also inhibit proper functioning of the urinary system. Therefore, it becomes very essential to prevent formation and reformation of stones.

Most common types of stones found in kidney are calcium oxalate; these tend to develop when urine has low pH. Other factors which contribute to formation of calcium oxalate stones are calcium and oxalate in diet and oxalate produced by the body. Other types of stone are calcium phosphate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine; these are less common and are result of different factors. To avoid kidney stones, patients needs to have a diet that is less in the contents that promote formation of kidney stones. There are a few methods which can prevent formation and recurrence of kidney stones. Let us check out some of these.

Reducing oxalate-containing foods in the diet helps a great deal. Your doctor will be able to let you know the kind of stone your kidney has with help of different tests, etc. However, to prevent formation of most common types of stones, i.e., calcium oxalate, it is necessary to cut down on oxalate-rich foods from the diet. Your dietitian would be able to make a list of foods containing oxalate.

One of the methods to prevent formation of any kind of stone is drinking lots and lots of water through the day. People suffering from kidney stones are advised to consume more than 12 glasses of water per day. More of water helps the present stones to dissolve, and prevents the formation of new stones. Water intake needs to be increased during summer as a lot of it gets lost through sweat. Plus, water is a calorie-free and inexpensive method to prevent formation of kidney stones.Read more about Kidney Stones Diet.
